On February 6, 2026, The Wright Valley Trio release their new album Leben ist Schmerz — a relentless statement rooted deep in Doom Metal and Sludge Metal. Slow, repetitive, and deliberately exhausting, the album rejects accessibility and demands full attention.
Leben ist Schmerz consists of only two tracks with a total running time of over 47 minutes: the title track “Leben ist Schmerz” and “Steineschmelzer.” Both pieces are built on dragging guitar riffs, massive walls of sound, and a suffocating atmosphere that pulls the listener into the psychological space the music inhabits.
Lyrically, Leben ist Schmerz confronts experiences related to bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. The texts describe a world of extremes — no middle ground, no grey areas, only black or white. The recurring image of a black hole represents the desire to escape, while simultaneously symbolizing the inescapable pull of despair and hopelessness.
Musically, the trio remains sharply focused: crushingly heavy guitars, low-tuned bass, stoic drums, and sparingly used synthesizers form a dense and oppressive soundscape. Vocals and instruments exist side by side without traditional hierarchy. “Steineschmelzer” is entirely instrumental, intensifying the physical and almost meditative impact of the record.
The album was recorded between 2023 and 2025. Drums and vocals were tracked at Iron Bar Studio with Lorenz Blümler, while guitars, bass, and synthesizers were recorded independently by the band. Mixing was handled by Lorenz Blümler at Iron Bar. Artwork and layout were created by bassist Robert Krause, continuing the album’s reduced and uncompromising aesthetic.
Leben ist Schmerz is not background music.
It requires patience, confrontation, and endurance.

Leben ist Schmerz
Ist dies der Anfang
Der Anfang vom Ende
Ist dies das Ende
oder bin ich schon tot
Bewegungslos, ausgebrannt
am Leben, doch tot
lebendig begraben
ohne Hoffnung
Es gibt keine Hoffnung
